In April 2008 alone, the finding from the Road Safety Cambodia showed that.

A provisional number of 2,545 casualties were reported by the participating hospitals, health centres, private clinics and traffic police departments in the 24 reporting provinces. Among them, 715 were severely injured and 176 died. The number of fatalities has increased by 21% compared to April 2007. The peak of casualties and fatalities were observed during the Khmer New Year Holiday (920 injured, and 62 died during 12th to 16th).

Among the Asian Countries, Cambodia classified to be the number one that got more road accident cases. Phnom Penh face the most road accident and people died because of this accident everyday.

Road safety education and other tools are distributed through media and different throught to help cut down the number of accident each year. However, it lacks of attentive from people themselves. By reading these guidance, people will learn and have more idea for better prevention and for their own safety traveling on the road. Today, it is adviced that you should wear helmet, put the side mirror on your motor, bring a copy of your driving license to avoid paying money to the police when they stop you on the road.

Belief & Spiritual House

2574570778_cc1c3c9575_m Belief & Spiritual House Traditionally Cambodian has a strong belief in spirits. Life is adapting very closely with older generations. Most Cambodian will look into different strong spirits as they believe the spirit will help them to avoid harming in the family and bring the prosperity.

Not just the people living in the rural area but in the city as well. You can find the spiritual house that represent the Cambodian belief almost everywhere in the public especially under the big tree or at some places where they believe the spirit stay there.

There are not many reasons when people offer themselves to spirits. The only thing that caught them in is because they think the spirit can set them free and live a better life. If in the family has someone gets sick then the family member will likely go to pray to the spirit with some particular offering. And today this kind of belief is slowing down because of the new technology and people are educated better. And as well, people who run their business whether at home or company will have a place set to offer to spirit where they believe could bring them lucks.

Basically, follow by not thinking and just go for it without any clear decision will cause despair and lost. So the setting up of spirit house will become more like routine rather than belief.

517908138_5d80e1101c_m The Cruel Lightning in Rainy SeasonRainy season is the blessing season to Cambodia and its people. It is the farming time. Farmer normally starts their farming in the early morning and end at the late evening. The main crop during the rainy season is rice planting.

One important notice of this year is the lightning kills many people and animal at the field and event in the city. The news reported that farmer who went out to do their farming were killed at the field. A few cases were dead as in group while they were serving at their land or outside the house to look after their animal. Others are individual who were killed by the lightning. A few days ago there was a lightning case that killed a young lady who came for chitchat with her partner at the riverfront where many people like to hang out.

After the lightning killed the young lady, the man who is her partner get on the motor and run away, kohsantepheap reported on Friday 15th August 2008. And at the same week and this week there were a few other cases on the news reported to kill a few more people and animal. That is abnormal that something like this happen in Cambodia where it was not happen to be very frequent that the lightning kill people like this at all in the past.

I wonder whether it is because of the natural disaster or the loose of natural resources and as a result it brings this phenomenon? Maybe, it is because of the growing and expansion of magnetic area with all the cable and stuffs like that around the living area that’s why it causes such problems. In order to prevent or to avoid something like this happen then individual should be aware of that and should not go under the big tree or big light stand during the raining and not using any mechanic tools while it is raining. Prevention better than treatment!

In Phnom Penh this week there were a heavy raining for two days on Thursday and Friday in the evening betwwen 4 to 6pm. With 1 hour heavy raining can make the city flooded and as the result it was flooded in Phnom Penh. All the road were filled with raining water and this is not a good raining water as it mixed up with all the dirt that come up from under the ground.

During the rainy season, Phnom Penh face the difficulty of traffic jam and cause many motors and cars stuck on the road as they can move slowly one after another. The owner who control the vehicle seem not happy at all because some of them got their machince stop woring under the water on the road. Many houses and building a long the low road got wet and flooded inside the house.

After raining, the people will be likely to get sick if they don’t properly care for themselves because of the dirty flood in the city. It is very poison and bring lots of serious illness with all these dirty flooded water.

The water system is contructed everyday but it seems cannot solve the problem yet for now and i hope it will be better in a few more years to come. I hate raining in the city as i also face problem traveling a long the road during the flooded in the rainy season. Nothing we can do so i just come to complain.

Police Is the Fear of People in Cambodia

Recall back in 2001, i was stopped by the police at the corner of the traffic light of Sihanouk Blvd and Monivong Blvd and demanded me to pay 50000Rield. I was so scare at that time while i was just a countryside boy who just came to live in Phnom Penh.

Every word of the police made me shaking and finally because i didn’t want them to take my moto away to the police station which i didn’t know where until today. So i have to decide to pay all those money i had in the pocket (20000Riel). Of course, it was my fault that i turned against the sign at that time and it was the horrible experience first time for me to live in town.

And from that time on ward i have to be really be careful when i travel a long the road in Phnom Penh. If i am not aware enough i might be in trap or trouble. And early of 2008, i was caught another time for being not puting the side mirror on my motobike (6000 rield, demanded by the police at the corner  of MoEYS near Paragon shopping mall). Well, i tried to talk with the police for a while however i had to pay 4000 in order i can go.

As i notice today everywhere in town the eyes of the traveler both local and foreigners look around a far and try to travel on the treet where there are no police. What are the public servant duty? Is it to scare and threat the civil servant? I doubt.

Stopping moto vehicle and all the other type of vehicle become a popular business for today. Why not just fine the one who break the traffic law according to the set amount of money defined in the law? Is it hard to live withouth corruption & fearing and scaring and threatening others?

In real practice not many people ask for help from the authority otherwise it costs a lot of money to do so. Another interesting thing it happens to foreigners as well and the charge is normally higher if they are found to break the traffic rule in Phnom Penh, the price will goes double or tripple or even more. Then what should we say now, to encourage or discourage the action? Haha, you know that. :)

Hybrids in Malaysia

At the time of writing, the author Michael Tan has no knowledge of any green car incentives in Malaysia. The Honda Civic Hybrid has been available in Malaysia since 2004, but in the absence of tax breaks, sales of the hybrid have been poor to say the least. Malaysia’s tax system penalizes Completely Built Up (CBU) imported vehicles, and for the 1.3L Honda Civic Hybrid, it will encounter a 50 percent import duty, 90 percent Excise Duty, and a 10 percent Sales Tax on the total taxed value of the car–10 percent of Car Value + Import Duty + Excise Duty…Hybrids in Malaysia.
